MY NAME IS ELIZABETH …..SEASON ONE…..
My name is Elizabeth. I know I’m beautiful and, and really brilliant. I’m prestigious and I have won the admiration of many in my company. My proposals have always worked out effectively for my company, and I have been considered as one of the major success stories for our company. Many rich guys, I really mean wealthy guys have signed up many contracts for our company for my sake in a bid to get me to their bed, yet I have succeeded in disappointing them all. I couldn’t imagine that in my sixth year in the company, I have never slept with any of them in the name of getting contracts, safe for the two I dated. Anyway, not for their money. I get enough pay from my company. They provided me with a car and a luxuriously furnished apartment. Guys say I’m arrogant, I don’t give in easily. Many said my smile was bewitching, and anyone would go any extent just to have it. I believe it was a feat nature bestowed to me. I was the youngest to have received such privilege from the company. Mrs Catherine, our Directress would path me on the shoulder and say ‘my dear, the sky is your starting point’. The nature of the admiration I receive for my successes started making me obsessed. I then had only one goal – to be promoted to the board of directors. No one in my age was there, but if I could do that, then I think I’m at the zenith of my destiny.
My ordeals started that Monday morning when I entered my office, only to see Mrs Catherine and a handsome young man, a bit fair and had equal carving at the edges of his head with fine shaving. He had fine nose and seemed to wear a natural smile. As soon as I entered, Mrs Catherine spoke up,
“Oh Lizzy, good morning,”
“Good morning ma,” I responded sharply. The stare on my face already was asking questions. Looking at me she continued.
“Lizzy, you just came in time. May I have the pleasure of introducing to you our new recruit here, Austin. He will be working with you in our department. I hope you get to know each other well and make our work here more effective. The company hopes on both of you.” I couldn’t reply anything, I was just watching her lips, yet to understand the whole thing. Immediately she made for the door, but before she left she said, “It really took the company a deep search to get him. We wouldn’t hope anything below. You will be brought your working procedures shortly. Happy work, both of you.” She left. This got me bent over my table.
“Hi, I’m Austin,” he said with smile. He expected me to talk but I wasn’t in the mood. There was no need saying his name because I already knew it. “Would you mind if I know your name?” he asked gently. Without looking at him, I dashed out of the office. I followed Mrs Catherine to her office. I didn’t knock, I just entered. I saw the look on her face, she wasn’t surprised. In fact, she knew I was going to come. Without allowing me to talk she said,
“Believe me Lizzy, I know why you are here.”
“But ma, I can’t remember requesting for anybody,” I said starring that my daughter-mother look at her. She smiled.
“You see my dear, you do need somebody,” she said.
“Ma, haven’t I been performing well?”
“Of course you have dear. That’s why the board deemed it wise to share your work with another person for more efficiency okay?” She stood and came before me holding my shoulder. “Lizzy, our company is really moving to great heights, thanks to industrious minds like you. You see, you really need to relax and take things easy.”
“But ma, I’m not complaining.”
“Of course as a dedicated employee, you won’t.” She spoke more mildly as if I wasn’t understanding all along. “As a good daughter, you didn’t complain. But as a good mother also, I know when you need some relaxation, I know what is good for you. You have put in your best for the company, we are not here to exploit you, but to appreciate you. It’s obvious you don’t understand what we are doing now, but I hope you will thank me later. Actually, I was the person that suggested another recruit for you. It has taken us so much just to get that young man leave where he was working and join us. That was after we had interviewed over 180 applicants to no avail. We hope he will do his best with you. We hope for nothing other than your best okay?” She just patted my shoulder, smiled and sat back at her desk. She didn’t say anything more, but I knew what the gentle gesture meant – simply, ‘discussion ended’.
Mrs Catherine was like a mother to me. In fact, since I entered the company, she became my second mother. She was the Directress of our department. She was a woman in her mid-fifties, very diligent, brilliant and hyper-observant. She listens so well, talked meditatively. She was a role model. She was always objective in her judgements. I adored her goodwill and candidness. As the Directress, she was a formidable member of the board. And because of her peculiar diligence, our CEO gave her a seat beside him at the table. She has a formidable influence in the affairs of the company. Other members of other department would always lobby for her support to their proposals. She could stand against the whole board members and win a proposal. If she was the person that suggested another recruit for my work, then I have no choice. Her sense of humour was alluring. Whatever she did, it was to my interest, but for this one, Mrs Catherine has hit me hard. This was a job I knew how to do well, then I will have to start competing with someone over something I got praises for. It didn’t go easy with me.
I got back to my office and sat with my head bent forlorn. He opened the door and tapped it a little to my hearing. “Bad timing?” he asked, but I remained mute. He came forward, presented a file to my desk.
“Please, I was asked to meet you for clarification on this,” he said pointing at the particular file number. I just ignored him. I knew how embarrassing it could be but I wished he could just quit and submit his resignation letter and leave right away. He breathed in heavily and then said,
“See Lizzy, if we are going to work better and effective here, I don’t think it is going to be possible if we keep mute here, and you ignoring me this way. I know you are older here, and I also observed you are competent enough. Alright, take all the responsibilities but allow me to do the little I can okay?”
I didn’t know what was happening to me, how sad I suddenly became. It was moving through my veins and pissing me off. In fact, I just hated seeing his face. I hated him, for just no reason even though I had a reason which obviously was unreasonable. Anyway, I was just an employee just like any other employee. I have no say on who to employ or not. Just that I thought that I didn’t need any competition.
“Drop it on my desk,” I said at last. I had no option than to work with Austin. He didn’t seem ambitious like I was, he was a gentleman. He talked less and always smiled. He had dimples that brought out the beauty of his manliness. He was such a jovial person that even lower staff and workers find it comfortable with him. It was obvious they started loving him more than they do to me. I was surprised during his birthday, his office was filled with gifts. Not that I don’t get gifts from wealthy people during my birthdays, I found out that gifts from lower people really meant much. He hugged and thanked them. I had been in the office for over five years and had never witnessed such. I was becoming jealous of him day by day. Sometimes I worked overtime just to make sure I finished my work in time and submit. But he wouldn’t do such except when necessary. Not that he doesn’t sacrifice his time but mainly, he took things easier with himself. Even Mrs Catherine whenever she gave me new work would exhort me to take my time, meaning she wasn’t rushing me. Yet I always hurried over mine to submit first and be appraised more. I found out that I was becoming much ambitious. Since I began that, I still saw myself going low. Most times when I submit my proposals unlike before, they would return it back showing me too many inconsistencies and errors, and end up asking me to revisit it. Mrs Catherine had summoned me one morning to her office. When I came in she smiled as usual. My file was before her.
“Good morning, Lizzy,” she greeted me in her usual way.
“Good morning ma,” I greeted back.
“Please sit.” She flipped over some pages and then raised up her face. “Lizzy, were you really the person that drew this?” she asked. I saw the sarcastic expression written all over her face testifying that she wasn’t making any positive appraisal.
“Yes ma,” I answered. After some moment of silence, she closed the file, handed it over to me.
“Lizzy, please go and make this to worth you.” I didn’t know how disappointed I was. I felt like the ground should open and let me bury myself. I didn’t know how to move out from her office but I did stood up. When I was about to leave she said, “If you can free your mind from less important things, it will help you.” I knew where she was driving at, I left, and that day became scattered.
Our company was going to embark on a new plan for expansion, and for our product, so I drafted a new structural proposition which I submitted to Mrs. Catherine. She reviewed it and asked me to be ready to present it to the board of consultants. I was happy because if that proposition happened to be approved, then I would get the promotion I have sought for, and I would be the first in the company to get such at my age. Austin was going to be there. Normally, when one has a new imitative plan, he or she would present it to the board who would then analyse it, and questions would be thrown to the person. The acceptance and the approval of one’s proposals and initiatives depend on how one was able to defend the stuff. However, during cases of controversy, vote is casted. There were times when one would succeed in defending everything yet the board perhaps out of fear of taking risk would still not approve it. I have made several propositions which came out successful securing me the position I enjoyed. I had to meet with many consultants one after the other to secure their approval. I feared the ambitious lady I became, I never did such before.
That day, everyone was already settled before Austin came in. he came almost when I wanted to begin. Of course Mrs Catherine abhorred lateness, even though I knew something must have held him. But I wished he wasn’t there at all. He excused himself and sat down. I began pointing at the big white board that displayed my proposal with the led light at the mouth of the remote control that controlled my system. Thus I began.
“The land at Nike is estimated to be 50 hectares, which is approximately, 135 acres of land. The community is willing to let us possess it at 60 million naira. From the topology of the land, it has been proved to support tremendously the growth of cocoa, with 19.79% of its texture humus. It has its sand content 4.25 to 64.42%. The total nitrogen levels for all the studied sites ranges between 0.11 and 0.82%. It has reliable and exchangeable potassium and magnesium levels ranging between 0.01-26.00, and if we are to invest 150 million naira on it, we would have a direct supply of the stuff to our new department and branch dealing with it as both raw material and its bye products. We would become the sole producer and supplier of cocoa as raw material and other products associated with it in this region. I assure you, it won’t be long we would extend our tentacles to other regions. What we are talking about here will fetch us a whooping gain of over 350-450 million monthly and about 3.5 to 4 billion annually, and it would automatically increase our company’s GDP by 20%. If we invest on this, I can assure that we would end up giving out more jobs than we could imagine. Thank you,” I ended with my smiles staring at their faces. Immediately, they gave me my deserved ovation. I was happy that at last I was going to prove myself invaluable again to the company. I had hoped that this become my mega achievement. I hope to be a lady everyone was always going to be proud of. I already saw the looks of approvals on everyone’s face till Austin spoke up. I knew he was up to something.
“That’s a very awesome proposal, Lizzy and believe you me, the only thing holding back the signing of this awesome work of yours is simply because I’m not the Managing director. But nevertheless, in my little capacity, I can’t forgive my misgivings if I do not x-ray certain possibilities of future circumstance. Your soil evaluation is generally adequate in required nutrients but could become deficient in nutrient content in the near future especially as there is no fertilizer application being practiced by our company, especially now that you strongly suggesting that this be made the sole affair of our company. And further increase in yields might deplete the essential nutrients and such a situation could lead to soil infertility and then we thereby have to halt for the year unless you have another plan of getting such a mass of land with the same soil nutrients elsewhere. At least you know our geography and weather do not favour cocoa. I have curtly studied your analyses on the soil condition and that’s wonderful, I must confess. But if I may quickly comment, a soil that has 19.79% humus in texture is not only good for the cocoa, but can easily disintegrate at either slighted provocation of draught or flood.”
“Yes but I ….” I wanted to interrupt because I had already knew where he was going, but he wouldn’t allow me. He swiftly swept me over.
“If you wouldn’t mind Lizzy, allow me to arrive at my point,” he said staring me deep in the eyes, and believe me, they were intimidating and formidable. “What if we encounter flood or draught? I do not pray for such but we can’t mark it out as a possible possibility because in 2009 it occurred in that particular region, so also was in 2004 and 2000, and this year or next year can never be that exception. I mean, we are not good in this, and what If we encounter a major pest disaster, we would spend our resources treating that. For crying out loud, 150 million is not gotten from the tree.”
“Be specific, Austin,” Mrs Catherine said.
“Of course, I have a simple proposal. With the history of cocoa companies none of them depended on one area no matter how extensively large they are. Why not we book contract with companies doing this, as many as we deem possible, with such we know we have invested our money somewhere reliable and when one door closes, another one would be open begging us to enter. Than to insist on having our own room and when the door closes we begin to call people outside for help. With this, many little companies would be privileged to partner with us and I tell you, you can’t imagine the impact we are going make in the lives of people.” He sat down. Everywhere seemed cooled and I became nervous. Soonest what I dreaded was invoked, and that’s voting. Those in favour and those not. I wanted the ground to swallow me when the vote counted against me. Just there, Austin was asked to draw up his proposal and set it for verification, all left. I felt like rushing him and strangling him. Many who had previously promised me their support made me understand that the company’s interest was their priority. I packed my laptop and left for my office. At a time I couldn’t endure it, I got up and marched to his office. Without knocking I batched in. My impudent entrance awakened his attention. He raised his face and saw me looking fiercely at him. He didn’t seem much surprised, he only smiled and raised his face at me again.
“Please Lizzy,” pointing at his seat “You can have a seat than standing there and staring at me that way.” Of course, he knew there wasn’t any way I was going to sit on that seat, especially at that particular moment.
“What exactly do you mean by what you did over there?” I asked with a stern stare.
“Oh, take it easy. If you can seat down, then we can talk things over, sweetie.”
“Do not ever think I’m amused if this looks like a joke to you.”
“Believe me sweetie, I’m not joking.” He chuckled. “I’m just helping you.”
“Helping me what!” I shouted.
“Take it easy dear, we are not fighting okay?”
“Really! Of course, we are not fighting. I’m sure you don’t know what it took me to build that proposition up.”
“Believe you me sweetie, I know what it looks like. And I also know what it tastes like being denied of such. Perhaps, you should have concentrated more on those things you don’t see than the ones you were able to view easily. But I solemnly suggest that you desist from taking it personal.”
“Alright, I think at this juncture I appreciate your help. But don’t forget easily that you began this fight,” I said finally and left.
